SYDNEY CELEBRATES GAY & LESBIAN MARDI GRAS IN 2009
Today saw the unveiling of the 2009
Mardi Gras festival line-up. The
three weeks from 15th February to
7th March are bursting with cultural
icons and international talent, as
well as the key annual events such
as the Parade and Party. However
this 31st Mardi Gras will remain true
to the event’s origins as a force for
gay rights.
The first Mardi Gras was quite different from the today’s festival. While 2009 will see the city of Sydney
embrace the event as it has done for many years, the inaugural Parade was met with opposition from the
public and police.
Occurring in 1978, and in response to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, gay activists
organised an apolitical street party and parade beginning in Taylor Square – home to many of Sydney’s gay
bars, clubs and businesses.
The demonstration was named “Mardi Gras” to invoke a party atmosphere, and as they paraded through
Oxford St on Saturday 24th June 1978 latin music burst through speakers and many danced in the streets.
Many marchers wore fancy dress and encouraged people in the various bars along the route to join in.
Ultimately this first parade met with police hostility, and a road blockade in Sydney’s red light district Kings
Cross saw a final halt to the festivities. More than 50 people were arrested and several people were injured.
The police’s actions were later seen to be heavy handed, and the laws that were used to make the arrests
were repealed over the next 12 months.
The return of the parade in 1979 saw a growth in participants to 3000 people, and saw the first post-parade
Party. Both grew exponentially in the next few years gaining support from both the gay community and
‘straight’ Sydney.
By 1984 numbers had grown spectacularly to 50 000, and hostility towards the event from religious groups
and the police was more than matched by crowds of supporters. Organisers went from working with virtually
no budget, to making reasonable profits.
Despite the traumatic years of the mid-Eighties, when the event was nearly cancelled due to the AIDS crisis,
by the end of the decade it was officially named the “Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras” and was bigger than
ever.
The Mardi Gras grew over the Eighties and Nineties into the world’s most famous gay event. The Parade now
draws 10 000 participants and over 400,000 spectators turn out to see the colourful costumes, exuberant
floats, satire and sexy boys and girls. Conde Nast Traveller has rated it as one of the top ten street parades
in the world, up there with Rio and New Orleans.
The post-Parade Party is one of the world’s most famous dance parties. Up to 20,000 people turn out for the
elaborate staging, shows, top name DJs and performances by the likes of Kylie, Cyndi Lauper, Boy George,
Olivia Newton-John.
Then there is Fair Day, a sprawling daytime picnic in one of Sydney’s iconic parklands. It’s an event for gay
and lesbian families and the wider community and attracts up to 70 000 people.
The Harbour Party seduces thousands each year with stellar DJ line-ups and an exquisite location. There is
nothing quite like partying through a summer sundown in the Botanical Gardens, overlooking the world-
famous Sydney Harbour.
In addition today’s festival includes a diverse program of up to 100 cultural events; from art exhibitions to live
theatre and a film festival.
For three weeks every year Australia’s spectacular harbour city is filled with tourists from all around the world
who have come to Sydney for Mardi Gras. From beach sports at Bondi to high culture at the Sydney Opera

el 2009 Mardi Gras Festival (Feb 15 – Mar 7); incluyendo un desfile encabezado por Medalla de Oro Olímpica
Mateo Mitcham, una parte de la superestrella internacional DJs los Masones y Paul Oakenfold, actuaciones
de Roberta Flack y Joan Rivers, así como la gran invitación a participación mundial con una cultura-cruce
tema oficial de "Naciones Unidas".
New Mardi Gras esta muy entusiasmado de tener Olympic diver Mathew Mitcham como Jefe del desfile en
2009. Mitcham se ha convertido en un nombre familiar para superar sus batallas con depresión, y saliendo,
como homosexual deportista y triunfalmente ganar oro en Pekín 2008.
Su victoria lo combertio en una figura inspiracional para toda la comunidad nacional australiana e la
cimunidad internacional gay, y ganó Fairfax Medios Deportivos 2008 intérprete del Año por el voto popular.
El Presidente de New Mardi Gras David Imrie estaba emocionado de tener Mitcham, participación, comento,
"por crear uno de los más mágico momentos en la historia Australiana de las Olympiadas fue la opción
obvia para este año, desfile." El prestigioso papel de Jefe del desfile ha sido adoptadas previamente por la
gusta de American Comediante Magaret Cho, y actor Británico Rupert Everett.
El desfile será una celebración internacional, con 2009, tema de Naciones Unidas. Sydney se ajusta a ver
un espectacular exhibición de banderas y cultural vestido, como Mardi Gras lanza abierto el guante a grupos
nacionales en Australia, y todo el mundo, para representar a sus naciones en la colorida fiesta que se ha
convertido en un famoso caso.
Las Naciones Unidas es un tema de esperanza para exhibir la excitante diversidad de los gays y lesbianas,
mientras difundir un mensaje de la importancia de los derechos humanos de los miembros de la GLBT
comunidad alrededor del mundo.
Tras el desfile es la siempre popular Fiesta de Mardi Gras, que nunca falla para incluir a miles de top
internacional talento año tras año. La presión es el después de 2008, vender-out caso, y New Mardi Gras ha
anunciado un electrizante preliminar lista de artistas.
Su primera aparición en el Mardi Gras en 2009 es Paul Oakenfold. Un artista con una carrera fenomenal de
20 años de produciendo y hacienda remezclas, Oakenfold también ha sido nombrado el top DJ del mundo
por Rolling Stone, BPM, DJmag e incontables más. Actuará en la parte de atrás de la gira ‘Sticky and Sweet’
de Madonna y promete ser un fenomenal de la noche.
Con el publico todavia hablando de su show en 2007, duo The Freemasons de UK se ponen a hacer un
retorno triunfal en la Fiesta de Mardi Gras en 2009. Los últimos años han tenido un éxito ejecutar de
pendientes remezclas con Kelly Rowland, Shakira y particularmente Beyonce, así como la produccion de
temas de discotecas internacional como Uninvited and Love On My Mind.
También anunciado hoy fue el contrato de Joan Rivers, infame comediante y la indiscutible reina de la
alfombra roja, se ajusta a entretener Sydney con su rapidez en la semana final del festival. Sus visitas
anteriores a Australia han atraído tanta crítica como han polémica, y New Mardi Gras está muy
entusiasmado de tener Joan Rivers una ves mas.
La diva Americana de jazz y soul "Killing Me Softly" cantante Roberta Flack une la Sinfonía Orquesta de
Sydney para el festival, mientras que la Australiana Tina Arena se ajusta a comparecer por una serie de
actuaciones en el Teatro del Estado. Estos artistas son solo una parte de más de 80 actos confirmados
para el festival de 2009, resultando en el Mardi Gras mas unico y diverso que se a visto todavía.
