US braces itself for Day Without a Gay protest against gay marriage
discrimination
The passing of a ballot measures banning gay
marriage in California, Florida and Arizona earlier
this month has led to a new surge in activism
across the US, sometimes referred to as
Stonewall 2.0.
Individuals have been using mobile phones,
social networking sites and other technology to
organize and protest.
One of the most original campaigns driven by
the internet is the Day Without A Gay, which
despite only being launched last week has its
own website and logo, a Facebook group with
nearly 2,000 members and even its own T-shirts.
"Gay people and our allies are compassionate,
sensitive, caring, mobilized, and programmed for success," said the organizers.
"A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love.
"On December 10th, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a
variety of different causes.
"On December 10th, you are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in "gay"- and
donate your time to service."
The idea of 'calling in gay' could be an issue in the 30 states where lesbian, gay and bisexual employees
have no legal protection against discrimination at work.
The organizers have provided a list of other activities that may not involve coming out in the workplace.
Ten of thousands of Americans protested the bans on gay marriage at rallies across the country last
weekend, many of them spurred into action by internet campaigns.
