Brazilian president defends legalization of Gay marriage

Brasilia - (AFP)... Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, declared himself in favor of the legalization of
civil unions between homosexuals, in a recent interview on Brazilian TV.

"I’ve always defended the right to (same sex)civil unions. I think we need to stop the hypocrisy in this country,
because we know that it exists. There are men living with men, women with women, and they often build
extraordinary lives together, and that is why I am in favor. We need to stop with these prejudices" said Lula.

"Every human being is entitled to live his life as he understands it to be, as long as it doesn’t impede on
others," he added. "Why are the politicians who are opposed to it not rejecting their votes? Why is the
Brazilian state not rejecting the income tax they pay?" he questioned.

"What we have to do is adopt it," he stressed, recalling that there are several bills in this regard in Parliament.

Lula inaugurated in June the first conference of the National Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender
(GLBT), in which the government announced that it intends to support specific public policies. He then
received a deafening ovation when he posed for photos with the flag rainbow flag.

Brasilia – (AFP)… El presidente brasileño, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, se declaró favorable a la legalización de
la unión civil entre homosexuales, en una entrevista la noche del miércoles con TV Brasil.

"Siempre defendí el derecho a la unión civil (de personas del mismo sexo). Creo que tenemos que parar
con la hipocresía en este país, porque sabemos que existe. Hay hombre viviendo con hombre, mujer con
mujer, y muchas veces construyen una vida extraordinaria juntos, y por eso soy favorable. Tenemos que
parar con esos prejuicios" , dijo Lula.

"Cada ser humano vive su vida como bien entiende, simpre que no moleste la de los otros" , añadió al
respecto. "¿Por qué los políticos que son contrarios no rechazan sus votos? ¿Por qué el Estado brasileño
no rechaza el impuesto de renta que ellos pagan?" , cuestionó.

"Lo que tenemos que hacer es aprobarlo" , enfatizó, recordando que hay varios proyectos de ley en ese
sentido en el Parlamento.

Lula inauguró en junio la I Conferencia Nacional de Gays, Lesbianas, Bisexuales, Travestis y Transexuales
(GLBTT) , en la cual el gobierno anunció que pretende apoyar políticas públicas específicas y donde recibió
una ensordecedora ovación al posar para las fotos con la bandera del arcoiris.
