commitment to LGBT equality has encouraged many members of Congress,
including me, to help spread domestic partnership benefits to all LGBT
employees of the federal government, including U.S. diplomats serving in our
country’s many embassies around the world and other federal employees
stationed in different countries.
Recently, I along with 32 other members of Congress, sent a letter to
Ambassador Susan Rice, the Permanent U.S. Representative to the United
Nations, to encourage her support to ensure the fair and equitable treatment of
all U.S. citizens who serve as UN employees. It is our hope that through this letter,
American employees at the UN would be able to designate their same-sex
partners as domestic partners and thus ensure the same benefits.
It is extremely important that the leaders and lawmakers of our country work
together to help ensure equal rights, equal benefits, and equal treatment to all
members of society, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I
believe that Congress has taken positive steps towards ensuring a better future
for members of the LGBT community in the United States and around the world. I
will continue to be a strong voice for the LGBT community in my South Florida
district and around the country.

August 21, 2009... Miami, Florida - As a member of the United States Congress,
I have continually worked toward ensuring that every man and every woman
enjoys the equality they deserve under our Constitution. It is extraordinarily
important to also protect the rights of all men and women regardless of their
sexual orientation. I have been an active supporter of the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transgender community for years and have worked with Congress
to continue to defend the civil rights of all Americans.
I have had the opportunity to work with other members of Congress to help
ensure equal rights and benefits to all U.S. citizens. As a founding member and
vice-chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, I have been strongly committed to
guaranteeing the full enjoyment of human rights for all members of the LGBT
community around the world. The caucus will hopefully act as a voice for the
LGBT community to help work toward extending equal rights, repealing
discriminatory laws, curbing hate-motivated violence, and improving the health
and well being for all members of the community regardless of their
sexual-orientation.
