Carlos Sastre wins Tour de France
PARIS (AP)—Carlos Sastre has won the Tour de France in one of the
closest finishes in the 105-year-old race. He is the third Spaniard in
a row to win cycling’s premier event.
Sastre held his 65-second lead over Cadel Evans of Australia. The 21
st and final stage was won by Gert Steegmans.
The 89-mile ride to the Champs-Elysees on Sunday was largely
ceremonial because Sastre all but assured himself the victory a day
earlier in the final time trial.
The 33-year-old Spanish rider is among the oldest men to win the
Tour for a first time. It is his sixth top-10 finish in the race.
As in the last two years, this year’s Tour was plagued by doping. Three riders were ousted in drugs busts.
