CONGRESSWOMAN ROS-LEHTINEN MAKES HISTORIC COMMITMENT AT
MIAMI LCR EVENT TO OPPOSE FLORIDA’S MARRIAGE AMENDMENT IN NOV.
Miami, Florida - Sunday, July 27, 2008…
As the evening’sfestivities at Omar
Cassola's home in Miami Shores
reached a political pitch, the
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
took a decidedly historic and
significant turn. Ros-Lehtinen pledged
her support for Florida’s SayNo2.com
campaign in opposition to
Amendment 2, the so-called Florida
Marriage Protection Amendment
which reads "Inasmuch as marriage is
the legal union of only one man and
one woman as husband and wife, no
other legal union that is treated as marriage
or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or
Members of Miami’s newly formed Log Cabin Republicans
Club cheered and applauded as the guest of honor, first
elected in 1989 to the United States Congress, representing Florida’s 18th Congressional District in the
United States House of Representatives, as she made her pledge to the group.
“I have a longstanding record of protecting human rights and civil liberties without regard to a
person’s sexual orientation. Amendment 2 is short but it could have far reaching effects,
including taking healthcare away from children and other unintended consequences.
Complications could include restricting hospital visitations and limiting access to healthcare.
Matters such as this should not be placed in a state constitution.
In Florida, the term marriage is already defined as a relationship between a man and a woman.
Amendment 2 will involve the government in our personal lives by dissolving locally recognized
domestic partnerships, endangering the legal rights of unmarried couples, and weakening
business responsibilities such as healthcare and retirement benefits.
Amendment 2 infringes on the basic rights of couples to exist and at its core, takes away legal
recourse and accountability, making couples struggle outside the rule of law. Every American
should know that they will be treated fairly under our constitution.”
- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
“We are delighted that the Congresswoman has shown her support in opposing this divisive amendment,
and that she chose to do so at our Log Cabin event” said Log Cabin Miami president & attorney Robert
Watson. “The amendment will be on the November 2008 ballot and requires 60% approval to be adopted.
Every unmarried Floridian will be impacted by this amendment, and the Congresswoman's show of support
for the SayNo2.com campaign is a great thing for all Floridians” added LCR Miami member & Florida Red
and Blue's SayNo2 campaign supporter, Ron Brenesky.
Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen joins more than 200 Florida Leaders who oppose the amendment,
including six members of Congress, Florida CFO Alex Sink, the League of Women Voters, Florida
Professional Firefighters, and many more.
“Unity Coalition/Coalicion Unida is proud to join the SayNo2.com campaign, and proud to have Ros-Lehtinen
on our side on this important issue. She has had a long history of supporting LGBT rights, and her
announcement tonight at the Log Cabin event in Miami only solidifies our communities commitment to her.”
added Herb Sosa, event participant & community activist.
Log Cabin Republicans is the nation's only organization of Republicans who support fairness, freedom, and
equality for gay and lesbian Americans. Log Cabin has state and local chapters nationwide, a federal
political action committee, and state political action committees.
