It’s mid July, and we are still basking in the afterglow of this year’s gay pride
celebration. This year more than in several years past, the community came
together with a greater purpose than partying and hooking up. It felt like we
really felt proud to be LGBT and we went to the various events with a real sense
of needing to let the mainstream know that we are still here.
With the passing of Prop 8 here in California, there seemed to be a renewed
sense of purpose, a bigger reason to get together en masse to show a united
front. Also bringing us together were issues of immigration and the rights of
same sex couples who can’t marry to keep their loved ones in this country.
Queer Latin@s have been marching, attending city council meetings and trying
change policies from the ground floor to the highest levels of government in an
attempt to come out ahead in the battle for civil rights.
With these events that affect our communities directly, along with the
economy in its current state, many artistas have allowed their art to speak for
them. We’re seeing many works from visual art to performance art that reflect
how Latin@s are coping and interpreting these polarizing themes.

Miel (Honey) known as an aphrodisiac, a soother a, a love maker is also a
cabaret of artists and musicians able to cleanse your spirit and inspire your
heart. An eclectic night of soul, folk, bossa nova, hip hop and drum beats with
Lena, María Medina Serafin, Nassirah, Maritri Garrett (from NYC) and the short
film: "Non-Resident Alien". This event will be hosted by Maceo Cabrera Estévez
of "Amor Cubano: In a bottle, a tube and a small packet".
Starting off the night is the viewing of "Non-Resident Alien" by Alejandro Gabriel
Cruz Gonzalez. Premiered this year at both the Frameline and QWOCMAPP Film
Festival, this documentary short film focuses on the journey of three Afro-Cuban
lesbians, Las Krudas Cubensi, who emigrate from Cuba in pursuit of greater
artistic and social freedom. Next bringing in her Caribbean flavors is Maria
Medina Serafin, a bilingual poeta/percussionist and sonera of salsa music has
recorded on several albums such as, "Fiesta Musical" and "Johnny Conga and
Caribe". Also from the Caribbean is Lena a shape-shifting island woman whose
songs tell the tales of home, the sweetness of life and the changing world.
Bringing in the sounds further south of the Americas is Nassirah singing bossa
nova. The voice of this California songbird has been described as both sultry and
soulful teeming with sweetness and intimacy. Presently Nassirah is writing and
recording vocals for a number of projects, ranging from artist compilations to
motion picture soundtracks, as well as, her first solo-album due for release early
2010. Lastly is Maritri Garrett, one of the founders of the SoulFolk Experience of
NYC. Few singers talk about stories of love, life, and loss the way Maritri can. Her
poignant, bittersweet lyrics, tells “grown folks stories” in a way that will break
you down to the core. Her recent performances include appearances at Def
Poetry Plugged In at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; the Apollo Theater with
Sekou Sundiata and Ani Di Franco.

Estamos a mediados de Julio
y aun nos deleitamos en las
celebraciones del orgullo
gay. Este ano, la comunidad
se unifico mas que en los
antepasados, con un
proposito mayor que pura
fiesta y enganches, para
celebrar. Palpamos el
orgullo de ser LGBT y
atendimos los varios eventos , dejando sentir a la comunidad en general
nuestra presencia.
Al haber adoptado la Propocision 8 en California, nos ha renacido un nuevo
sentido de proposito y una necesidad de demostrar, a nivel grupal, un frente
mas unido. Otras dos luchas que nos fortificaron la union comunitaria, fueron el
tema de la imigracion y el del matrimonio de parejas del mismo sexo,
desafortunados que pierden a sus parejas a la deportacion. L@s Latin@s
“queer” estamos marchando, asistiendo reuniones de la alcaldia, y pediendo
reformas desde los niveles mas bajos hasta los puestos mas altos del gobierno,
con las esperanzas de salir adelante en la lucha por nuestros derechos civiles.
Con los eventos que afectan a nuestra comunidad directamente y la economia
en su estado actual, los artistas nos manifestamos a traves del arte. Habemos
presenciado como nuestra comunidad Latin@ representa estos temas
polarizados utilizando medios visuales y la actuacion, lo cual refleja nuestros

Al haber adoptado la Propocision 8 en California, nos ha renacido un nuevo
sentido de proposito y una necesidad de demostrar, a nivel grupal, un frente
mas unido. Otras dos luchas que nos fortificaron la union comunitaria, fueron el
tema de la imigracion y el del matrimonio de parejas del mismo sexo,
desafortunados que pierden a sus parejas a la deportacion. L@s Latin@s
“queer” estamos marchando, asistiendo reuniones de la alcaldia, y pediendo
reformas desde los niveles mas bajos hasta los puestos mas altos del gobierno,
con las esperanzas de salir adelante en la lucha por nuestros derechos civiles.
Con los eventos que afectan a nuestra comunidad directamente y la economia
en su estado actual, los artistas nos manifestamos a traves del arte. Habemos
presenciado como nuestra comunidad Latin@ representa estos temas
polarizados utilizando medios visuales y la actuacion, lo cual refleja nuestros

sentimientos.
Este año, QueLACo ha tomado como tema la “Trascendencia”. ?Como artistas,
como logramos l@s Latin@s, trascender lo que presenciamos en el mundo de
hoy y transformarlo en algo constructivo? Al ser un grupo tan enfocado,
compuesto de artista “queer” y latin@s, tenemos una vision especifica que
deseamos compartir con nuestras amistades y el mundo entero. Optamos por
crear arte hermoso, controversial, e impactante y poner en efecto el cambio.
Como mencione anteriormente, el tema que elegimos este ano es la
“trascendencia”. Este ano, el festival de QueLACo se dara a lugar en los meses
de setiembre y octubre. La inaguracion del festival sera una instalacion de arte
visual, compuesta por artistas locales y renombrados, quienes portaran su
interpretacion de lo que significa trascender. El festival trascurre del 12 de
setiembre al 3 de octubre. Mayores detalles por venir.
En el 25 de setiembre habra un evento de poesia (spoken word), Yosimar Reyes,
un residente de San Jose California, sera el curador del evento. Yosimar es un
artista dinamico, quien se expresa a traves de la palabra –hablada y promete
desarrollar un evento excitante. Los detalles del evento son los siguientes:

Aclamados Jot@s Reunidos, multi – espiritus, se reunen para unir su voz bajo un
mismo techo. Cada uno representando una diferente comunidad de los
estados de Nevada, Arizona y California. Estos temerarios poetas Mexicanos se
unen para responder a la pregunta de que signifa ser algo complejo y la
encarnacion de los varios movimientos sociales que luchan por la justicia,
lidear con con ser imigrantes a ser “queers” y de feministas a “hombres”. A

Miel (Honey) es conocida como afrodisíaco y como calmante, un amante es
también un cabaret de artistas y músicos capaces de limpiar tu espíritu e
inspirar tu corazon. Una noche ecléctica con música soul, folk, bossa nova, hip
hop y precusión con Lena, María Medina Serafin, Nassirah, Maritri Garrett (de
NYC) y el cortometraje: “Extranjero-No Residente”(Non-Resident Alien). Este
evento será presentado por Maceo Cabrera Estévez de "Amor Cubano: “En una
botella, un tubo y un pequeño bolsillo”.
Comenzaremos la noche presentando el cortometraje “Extranjero-No
Residente” de Alejandro Gabriel Cruz Gonzalez. Presentado este año en los
festivales Frameline y el festival de cine QWOCMAPP, este documentario de
cortometraje trata sobre el viaje de tres lesbianas afrocubanas, Las Krudas
Cubensi, quienes emigraron de Cuba en búsqueda de una major libertad
artística y social. Luego nos deleitaremos con los sabores caribeños de Maria
Medina Serafin, poeta/percusionista bilingüe y sonera de música salsa. Ella ha
grabado muchos álbunes tales como, "Fiesta Musical," "Johnny Conga y Caribe".
También desde el Caribe llega Lena, una mujer isleña cuyas canciones cuentan
acerca de cuentos del hogar, la dulzura de la vida y del mundo cambiante.
Trayendo los sonidos desde América del Sur viene Nassirah cantando bossa
nova. La voz de ave de esta califoriana ha sido descripta como ambas cálida y
emocional, teñida con dulzura e intimidad.
Actualmente Nassirah está escribiendo y grabando voces para varios
projectos, desde compilaciones hasta música para películas, así también como
su primer album solista que se estrenará a inicios del 2010.
Para concluir se presentará Maritri Garrett, uno de los fundadores de SoulFolk
Experience en NYC. Pocos cantantes cuentan historias de amor, vida, y pérdida
de la manera en que lo hace Maritri. Sus liricas; emotivas y agrias, cuentan
“historias de personas grandes” de una manera que te llegaran hasta lo mas
