Stonewall Street Festival 2010 - Fort Lauderdale and Wilton
Manors Gay Pride
Celebrating Stonewall Street Festival and Parade in Wilton Manors
As Fort Lauderdale has developed over the past 15 years into one of the world's
premier gay resort destinations, so to has its annual Stonewall Street Festival
and Parade grown and grown. It should be noted that Fort Lauderdale
celebrates its main Gay Pride South Florida Festival, aka Pridefest, earlier in the
year (it took place over the weekend of March 13 and 14 in 2010), and this is
also a terrific event, drawing crowds from all over South Florida. The Stonewall
Street Festival celebration occurs in mid-June (June 20, 2010 - note that this is a
date change, from Saturday to Sunday, for this year) in the gay-popular
community of Wilton Manors (which adjoins Fort Lauderdale), to honor what
many consider to be one of the foremost events in the history of lesbian and gay
rights, the Stonewall Riots, which commenced early in the morning on June 28,
1969. It was begun in 2000 and has blossomed into a first-rate, festive
celebration in recent years.
Many major cities around the world now host their Gay Pride Celebrations
around this time, among them Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis, New York City,
San Francisco, Santa Fe, Seattle, and Toronto.
Fort Lauderdale's Stonewall Street Festival takes place in one of the metro
area's most GLBT-visible areas, the Wilton Manors community, and consists of
festival and parade, both on Sunday, June 20. The festival, which starts at noon,
consists of a street fair with some 150 vendors and GLBT organizations, and the
parade starts at 11 am and runs northeast along Wilton Drive from N.E. 20th St.
