5 health tips -- just for you, guys
by Jacki Donaldson

Listen up, men: If good health is a priority you've set your sights on,
here are five habits you might want to adopt. Guaranteed to increase
your odds of living well, these five -- not the same old diet, exercise,
smoking, and drinking tips -- are simple and easy to incorporate
into your daily routine.
• Wash your hands. It sounds simple but an alarming number of
men don't.  About one-third of you don't scrub up after using public
restrooms compared to 12 percent of women, according to a Harris
Interactive nationwide poll. Frequent hand washing is the single
best thing you can do to avoid catching colds, the flu, and other germs lurking around.
• Minimize migraines. Migraine sufferers are at a higher risk for a number of health problems later in life.
If you suffer from headaches, consult your doctor. About 7.5 million men in the U.S. get migraines but many
don't get help. Scary since men who experience migraines are 42 percent more likely to experience heart
attacks than those without the headaches. When that migraine strikes, a call to the doctor is definitely in
order.

• Take an aspirin a day. Aspirin has a number of healthy benefits -- talk to your doctor to see if it's right for
you.  If you're one of them, get help.  An aspirin a day may keep your heart attack risk at bay. Dr. Sanjay Gupta
says it also thins blood, prevents stroke and Alzheimer's disease, and may even cut the risk of colon cancer.
Ask your doctor before you begin this daily regimen.
• Stop snoring. Snoring isn't just annoying for your partner; it's bad for your health, too.  The National
Sleep Foundation (NSF) reports that nearly one in three Americans snores occasionally, and 37 million are
habitual snorers. Pretty annoying stuff. But snoring may be more than just a bother. It can also be a health
risk. It can harm your relationship, cost you valuable sleep, and even lead to a condition called sleep apnea,
characterized by a cessation of breathing for several seconds. Your physician and sleep specialists can
help, though, so be sure to track one of these medical professionals down if snoring is one of your issues.
• Get to the doctor. Are you one of the millions of men who avoids your MD? Your health could be
suffering as a result. Women are twice as likely to see a doctor for annual exams and preventative care.
Why? The wait time, embarrassment, a lack of symptoms, and fear of being judged top this list of why men
and medical care don't go hand in hand. But they should -- it doesn't take a symptom for a medical condition
to be discovered. And preventative screenings -- for colon and prostate cancer, for example -- can save
many lives. So, get yourself a doctor, guys. And get yourself an appointment.
