Beautiful Dreamer Transgender Event as part of Winter Party Festival
2008
By Herb Sosa
For the second year, local events producer Barbara Ann Coombs has
worked with the Gay Lesbian Task Force and has been responsible
for producing their Transgender Events as part of the Annual Winter
Party Festival. This year the Transgender event is entitled Beautiful
Dreamer.
March 1, 2008 will be the date for Transgender Event in the Tropics
to be hosted at Cafe Pisa in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Barbara Ann invites “All you marvelous girls and clever boys in
dreamy neighborhoods everywhere… to join her in this great event. Beautiful Dreamer will be on
Saturday, March 1st, 2008, 7:00 PM. Barbara Ann and the Task Force promise an evening of entertainment,
delicious food, drink, music and dancing at Cafe Pisa, with free and easy parking.
HS: Barbara Ann, tell me a bit about how you became involved in producing this event.
BAC: I volunteered to help during Winter Part Festival 2006 but at the last moment was unable to help
because of health problems. I felt so bad about not being able to help out that I wrote the Task Force and
asked to be considered for winter party Festival 2007. I began to attend the committee meetings and was
asked to take on the responsibility of producing a Transgender Event. Our first Event was Glamour
Unleashed it was a moderate success.
HS: Are there other events like this throughout the year or in other communities?
BAC: I can’t speak for other communities but here in Florida there are no organized events such as
Beautiful Dreamer. Across the country there are a number of TG Conferences lasting from three days to a
week. These conferences offer a variety of how to lectures plus presentations by professionals who support
the Gender Community with their services.
HS: What do you & the Task Force hope to accomplish with Beautiful Dreamer?
BAC: First better understanding of who and what we are by the Gay, Lesbian, and Bi communities, for them
to realize that we all need to work together to gain an equal footing with everyone else. To awaken our
community to the fact that each one of them is responsible to her sisters/ brothers to work together for the
common good.
HS: The Transgender community is often misunderstood and not well represented, even within the Gay &
Lesbian Community. How do you hope events as yours will change this?
BAC: Herb, that is the understatement of the year, even with in the Gender community there exist
controversy, but having just said that I hope that our involvement with the Task Force has given everyone a
chance to see a side of the Transgender community that they would never have an opportunity see. If only a
few people come to know us then the time and effort will be well spent.
HS: What are your plans for next year’s event(s)? How can one get involved?
BAC: At this point I can only hope that we will be asked to produce another transgender event for Winter
Party Festival 2009. Of course that all depends on how much support the Gender Community gives this type
of project.

WINTER PARTY FESTIVAL
February 27-March 1, 2008
Launched in 1994 as a one-time charity dance event on the sands of beautiful South Beach, Winter Party
Festival has evolved into a six-day festival benefiting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
community on the national and local levels. Over 10,000 guests from all over the United States and abroad
attend at least one of the 20 events - including music, fashion, art, comedy and more -- that take place in
Miami and Miami Beach.
The Festival climaxes with the Winter Party Beach Party, a dance event on the sands of South Beach that
draws a crowd of more than 5,500 revelers. The 15th Annual Beach Party will be the centerpiece of the 2008
Winter Party Festival.
This fabulous celebration, produced by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, is also an important
fundraiser for the LGBT community. To date, the Festival and its sister event, the Miami Recognition Dinner,
have raised over $1.6 million for organizations serving the South Florida LGBT community.
