Marta Donayre Named Executive Director of the AIDS Coalition Silicon
Valley

SAN JOSE, California – The AIDS Coalition Silicon Valley announced
that it has appointed Marta Donayre as its new executive director.

Donayre is a well-known leader who brings to the ACSV a wealth of
knowledge about HIV/AIDS as well as the local community. Her main
task is to help the ACSV grow and better serve its member agencies
in an era of budget cuts.

“Marta has extensive experience working with diverse communities
while having experience in HIV, said Teresa O’Neill ACSV board
president. “With the changing face of HIV and the changing needs
of those infected, we needed someone like Marta who can reach
out and relate to many constituencies.

There are 1,712 people living with AIDS in Santa Clara County as
of 2006, compared with 1,601 a year earlier, according to the county
department of public health. That’s a 6.2 percent increase.

And AIDS is still a killer in our community. As of Dec. 2006, 2,053 people died from the disease in Santa
Clara County, compared with 1,989 in the previous year.

There are an estimated 800 to 1,000 people infected with HIV in the county who don’t even know it,
according to public health estimates. And with severe budget cuts in the county’s public health
department leaves little money to address the potential large problem of HIV infections in Santa Clara County.

As a result, the county is dependent on organizations like the ACSV to provide necessary funds that support
HIV/AIDS prevention and support programs.

At this critical time in the HIV/AIDS fight, Donayre will be responsible for raising funds, and the profile of the
disease in our community.

Donayre is a well known activist locally and nationally. Her areas of work include advocating for the lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender community; immigrant rights; and working together with the labor movement;
among others. Before joining the ACSV, Donayre was the community relations coordinator at The Health
Trust AIDS Services.

“I am happy to be given the opportunity and the honor of working along with this community to face the
epidemic, said Donayre. “Although we are experiencing the challenges of reduced funding, I am
confident that we will collaborate with the local community to ensure that all HIV-related services are well-
funded in Santa Clara County.

Donayre was awarded the American Immigration Law Foundation Honorable Immigrant Award in 2006.
Ambiente Magazine included her in the 2005 Top 10 Hispanic Pride Awards. In 2003, she was named one of
the most influential Latinos by Tentaciones Magazine. Her work has been recognized by the San Francisco
Immigrant Rights Commission, California State Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Sally Lieber, Governor Gray
Davis, Assembly member Mark Leno, and Congress members Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Lee, among
others.
