that a camera is at hand to capture the moment, seems to be fortunate. Lucky for us.
Now back to the video! “It’s not so narrative...I’m typically not a narrative-guy,” Ruiz
admits. “I’m more visual. I interpret the music visually.” Which often may not be a clear
correlation of what the song is saying, but in this case, it serves and informs the work
that Ruiz is making to move the music video and evoke Kristine W’s vocals and
signature beats.. “As most gay men are, I’m drawn to very strong women -- that’s why I
love her,” he says of working with the pop icon.
The video for “The Power of Music” is choreographed with a hip-hop flavor, which pays
homage to Michael Jackson just as Kristine W had dedicated on the liner notes for the
single. “You get to see some of Michael Jackson’s moves in there and some hard
hitting hip-hop. The track is very hard, and Kristine can do that kinda stuff.” Which of
course gets the mind racing! A great dance single by one of the most enduring artist of
the genre, brought to vivid reality by one of the most innovative visual artists working
today...it can only exceed expectations!
“When Kristine orchestrates and creatively directs her own stuff, it’s so vastly different
from what I do with her -- I’ve been working with her for 15 years.” Developing that trust
with his subjects is imperative for the continual success Ruiz has been fortunate
enough to cultivate over the length of his career. He is after all incapsulating vibrant
moments with his images...images that will leave an indelible mark and impression on
the pop-culture consciousness and will certainly lead to inspiring other artists. Once
you’ve been captured by his lens, bathed in his impeccable lighting and reproduced as
one of his iconic hyper-realistic, porcelain-like menagerie -- then you know you’ve
achieved not just
stardom, but a delicious degree of infamy as only Mike
Ruiz can give you.

Mike Ruiz | Making Music Move!
By JC Alvarez
Celebrity photographer/videographer Mike Ruiz is the midst of wrapping up on his
latest project. His been charged with the task of directing the latest video from dance
club diva Kristine W...it’s for her latest single “The Power of Music”. With MTV
formatting more of The Hills and less of TRL (that stands for “Total Request Live” for
the uninitiated), the art of the music videos is nearly lost. Music artist have had to
elaborate on the medium to further promote and reconstitute the evolving music
industry. In the hands of a visual artist the likes of Mike Ruiz, Kristine W can rest
assure that the power of her music will be nothing short of stunning!
“I like working with Kristine W...she has her own sensibility, but I like taking her out of
her own element. I like shaking it up a bit!” But would you expect anything less from
this visual maestro? Mike Ruiz has set himself apart from other celebrity
photographers on the scene by reigniting the stylized glamorous photography most
associated with the decadence of Hollywood of a by-gone era. “I like doing that across
the board -- I like working with celebrities and portraying them in a way that they’ve
never been seen before.” And it’s this exploitive nature of his fanciful imagery that has
endeared him to the likes of Tyra Banks, Brooke Shields, Eva Longoria and,
of course, songstress Kristine W.
I asked about that upcoming video; I was
very curious. Like anyone who has followed
Ruiz and his work, as
well as anyone who is a
fan of photographic art,
Mike Ruiz is unlike any
other photographer or
videographer on the
scene today. Most
celebrity photogs are
content with elaborate
settings and depend on
natural lighting to tell
their stories -- and that’s
just fine. Ruiz has
always gone a step
further to evolve his
imagery and push the
content of his photo
work. When you look at
a Mike Ruiz piece, it’s as
if laser lights have been
poured into liquid
mercury and are part of
the palette unique to the
canvas he’s about to
unfold. The
happenstance
To that I offer this avid reader...stay tuned. Mike Ruiz has only begun to capture the
moments and move the images of our lives.
